Interview: Emma Follis
Emma is a Birmingham local, having been born in Sutton Coldfield and beginning her career with Aston Villa. Follis spent 14 years with The Villans, graduating from the Club’s Centre of Excellence. She is a former England U19 and U23 international too and joined Reading in 2015 making 39 appearances in total, scoring 19 goals. Emma signed for Birmingham City Ladies in February 2017 for an undisclosed fee.
1. What inspired you to become a professional footballer? I’ve played football since the age of 9, so it’s always been my passion. Because I love the game so much, when the opportunity to become professional came up, I took it with both hands.
2. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Always give the best you can, don’t give up and keep striving to where you want to be – even if it seems far in the distance. You are your only obstacle in life!
3. What is your proudest moment in football and why? Getting my first England call up when I was 17. I felt immensely proud and was really excited to represent my country.
4. If you could play against any team in any league in the world who would you play, in what stadium and why? I’d love to play at the Nou Camp, just because it’s such an amazing stadium.
5. What are your favourite pre and post-match meals? Pre-match I tend to go for either eggs or beans on toast. Sometimes I will have porridge with nuts and maple syrup. I prefer it to honey or sugar as it has a better nutritional value and tastes great!
6. What’s your favourite way to use pure Canadian maple syrup? I love to glaze Halloumi with maple syrup after it has been grilled. The taste of the sweet and salty is so, so good.
