Christmas Leftovers Croque Monsieur

Ingredients

For the Croque Monsieur

  • 25 g softened butter, plus extra for frying
  • 4 slices white bread
  • 125 g (4 oz) Gruyère cheese or Stilton trimmings
  • 4 slices maple-baked ham
  • mustard (quantity per preference, typically spread on bread slices)

Method

  1. Butter both sides of each slice of bread.
  2. Spread mustard on one side of each slice.
  3. Split the cheese and ham in half.

Assemble and cook

  1. Make two sandwiches with the mustard-spread sides facing inwards, layering ham and cheese evenly.
  2. Heat a griddle pan over medium heat.
  3. Fry the sandwiches for 3–4 minutes on each side until bread is golden and cheese has melted.

Serve

  1. Remove sandwiches from pan, cut in half, and serve immediately.
